Outreach Co-ordinator, Seetal gives us an update about the Excellence Hub and what to expect over the next academic year.
‘Hello lovely blog readers!
My name is Seetal and I am an Outreach Co-ordinator in the partnerships team, which basically means I get to work with lots of different schools and colleges on one-off events as well as collaborating with other universities on partnership events. It’s a very busy role with just the right amount of office work vs. delivery and tons of room for lots of creative planning.
You may (or may not) know that the University of Sheffield, Leeds and York are working together in partnership on a really exciting programme called the Excellence Hub. The programme aims to run inspiring events for young people to enhance their learning experience in school and college. All of our sessions are specific to a subject area or discipline and aimed at high achieving students in Y7 – Y13, and delivered by professional staff, students and/or leading academics in their field.
We have some really exciting events already planned in for this academic year, kicking off with the iGEM Edu Day in October 2016, which will be delivered by our very own undergraduate students. This event will focus on synthetic biology and how it can be used to solve global issues. We also have days that will be themed around World Book Day, enterprise in engineering, several weird and wonderful STEM sessions and opportunities to listen to pioneering researchers at the Festival of Social Sciences in November 2016.
The Excellence Hub for Yorkshire and Humber is not just for schools in this region but for anyone across the UK. Most of our events are either half day or full day but if you find that you can’t come to us then the chances are we could come to you! We have in the past, had schools contact us through the partnership, requesting help and support to deliver a session as part of their curriculum or would like a specialist session that will build on their students learning. If you would like us to discuss how we can work together, please contact the Excellence Hub email at email@example.com.
We want to make sure that your students really benefit from the day by gaining the full university experience and that is why we always have student ambassador’s helping out throughout the day, this gives pupils a real insight into what it’s really like to be a student and they can ask all those questions that they are too afraid of asking. So, if you like the sound of this so far then please check out the Excellence Hub events page it’s really easy to sign up and we will guarantee that you and your students will have a great day with us.
