We’ve gone back and spoken to students who completed the Sheffield Outreach and Access to Medicine Scheme (SOAMS) programme and who decided to stay at Sheffield for their degrees. Here’s how Aimee answered her 5 Minutes, 5 Questions.
What are you studying?
I am currently a fifth year medical student.
Where are you from?
I am from Chesterfield, a town just south of Sheffield.
Why did you take part in the programme?
I applied for SOAMS because my teacher encouraged me to take part. I was unsure whether I would be eligible to study medicine because I had heard what a competitive course it was. Neither of my parents had been to university and they were concerned that they wouldn’t be able to support me properly. As it turned out, applying for SOAMS was the best decision I ever made!
What was the best thing about the programme?
There are numerous opportunities provided by the programme which enabled me to gain the confidence I needed to apply for medical school. Due to the high competition, I was immensely grateful for the continuous support I had throughout my two years on SOAMS. I felt so comfortable knowing I had the support of others to help answer questions and assist me with the overall application process. I felt this interaction with the team benefited me enormously by the time I received my offer from Sheffield Medical School! Not only were the staff and students on hand throughout the activities, they were also encouraging with helping me prepare for my interview. As a thank you, I regularly participate during student event days where possible and I am enthusiastic to show my gratitude towards the staff involved!
What is the best thing about being a Sheffield student?
As a local girl, I am a home bird. I loved living in Endcliffe in first year, and I am always grateful that my family are so close by! Having grown up near Sheffield, I already knew the city well and I could happily recommend various favourite restaurants, tea shops and vintage stores! Sheffield is such a diverse but small city, the shopping (Meadowhall) is incredible and I would encourage everyone to explore the city, renowned for its culture and friendly people!
