Sussing out our Scholarships blog 2

Shabnam was awarded an Alumni Scholarship, she writes for us about how the scholarship has helped and why you should find out more.

Hi! I’m Shabnam. I am a first year student at the University of Sheffield, studying the BA Sociology with Criminology course. I took part in the Discover Law outreach scheme. I attended Sir Thomas Wharton Community College, Doncaster.

This time last year I applied for the Alumni Scholarship. I first heard about it from an email by the financial team from the University of Sheffield.

The application process was straightforward. I had to fill in an application form, in which the questions were related to my degree and how the scholarship would help me throughout my time at the University. Due to it being a competitive process, the CV part of the application needed to stand out in order to succeed in achieving this scholarship. So I gained feedback on my CV from my 6th form tutor and a lecturer at the University of Sheffield, who I met during the open day.

When I received an email congratulating me on gaining a scholarship, I was very happy. The reason being is because as I come from a low income household I did not have to rely on my parents anymore in attending university. The scholarship has helped me in buy the resources required for university. It has also helped me in paying my train fares as I commute everyday.

I would recommend students apply for this scholarship. University is very different to 6th Form, all equipment has to be purchased independently. By having extra money, it enables students to fund themselves properly, increasing your chances of success at university.

A tip I would recommend when completing the application, is to get somebody like a tutor to read through the application and gain feedback. This will help make the application be much stronger as small mistakes could lead to not achieving the scholarship.
