Sussing out our Scholarships blog 3

Kim is the final student who was successfully awarded an Alumni Scholarship that has written to our latest blog series.
I’m Kim and I took part in the Discover Arts and Humanities outreach programme from 2015-2017, while I was at King Edward VII Sixth form.
I was extremely happy that I was awarded with the Alumni scholarship as it means that I can live at home comfortably while I complete my Politics degree. I am less concerned about any financial worries now as the scholarship gives me an extra helping hand with additional costs for university that I didn’t initially consider.  I can travel comfortably to uni and I can afford the resources that are required for my course (books especially!). My health and well-being has improved too as I’ve used the scholarship funding to go swimming twice a week.
I was emailed about the scholarship and the University application process was quite simple. However, because I was planning on living at home for my degree, I had to then carry out a financial means test with Student Finance England to provide evidence for my eligibility for the scholarship. So do bear this in mind if you’re thinking of applying. My other top tip would be to honest about the reason why you deserve the scholarship in your application, even if it feels awkward.
I would definitely recommend the scholarship if you are constrained from living the whole ‘student experience’. It means that young people are able to do things that would be potentially a challenge without such economic support. It provides the opportunity to be able to do extra curricular activities that would be possibly out of reach if the scholarship hadn’t been awarded.
