Emily Matkin is a longstanding US in Schools Mentor, now in third year of mentoring! She is March’s Mentor of the Month for going above and beyond the call of mentoring. Emily arranged with her school and mentor team an alternative day for mentoring so Fir Vale mentees could still have a session despite it originally falling on Good Friday. Here’s how she answered her 5 Minutes. 5 Questions:
Where are you from:
What are you studying:
MA Psychology and Education
Where are you mentoring:
Fir Vale School
What made you want to become a mentor:
To help young people realise their potential and believe in themselves, and support them through some of the challenges of being at secondary school.
What is the best thing about mentoring so far and what are you most looking forward to:
My favourite moments are the one to one sessions where we reflect on the mentees’ progress, and you see it in their faces when they realise and acknowledge everything that they have achieved. I’m most looking forward to the celebration event because it’s another opportunity for reflection and recognition on a much bigger scale; it’s a huge confidence boost for the mentees and it creates a very positive atmosphere.
